Our Name

The word ikon (or “icon”) comes from the Greek term eikon, meaning “likeness” or “image.” An ikon is a person or thing that serves as a physical, visible symbol – an image – of something else. This term has been used throughout Christian history to refer to images depicting Jesus Christ or other holy figures. The purpose of an ikon is to convey the stories of the Scriptures and bring people closer to God.

We believe all people bear the image of God, and that the Church, specifically, is called to be the living, embodied image of Jesus Christ in the world, pursuing and participating in God’s unfolding story of restoration and redemption. As a church community, we bear God’s love, joy, grace, and peace to those around us. Our purpose is to be a living, breathing ikon of Jesus Christ to our neighbors and community.
