Our Faith Practices
(What We Do)
At IKON Indy, there are several practices of faith we perform regularly. We believe these spiritual disciplines draw us closer to God and are ways the Holy Spirit molds and shapes us into the image of Jesus Christ.
1. Eucharist (Communion) – We believe Jesus Christ is spiritually present when we participate in the Eucharist. Because we believe in the priesthood of all believers, we hold that any baptized person can consecrate the elements of the Eucharist.
2. Baptism – We believe in the Baptism of all believers as a provision of God’s grace and a command from Jesus. While we practice Baptism of professed believers, we also acknowledge and accept the validity of all forms of Christian baptism, including infant baptism. We believe baptism can be performed by any historically accepted Christian tradition, including immersion (dunking), aspersion (sprinkling), or affusion (pouring).
3. Worship – Our weekly Gatherings are centered on the worship of God. We believe worship is spiritually formative and indispensable to Christian discipleship. We draw on worship practices from different Christian traditions, ancient and modern.
4. Bible Study – We believe studying and knowing the stories of Scripture forms us in our knowledge of God (“theology”) and in our faith. Our regular Sunday teachings each week focus on a specific Scripture text. We also believe Scripture is best understood and interpreted in community; therefore, we encourage everyone to participate in regular Bible studies through groups and classes.
5. Community – We believe being in community with other disciples of Jesus is a spiritual discipline that refines our faith, as we learn to live and grow closer to God together. Jesus began his ministry by calling twelve disciples, continuing the long-held Jewish tradition of community as the primary means of discipleship.
6. Prayer – We believe prayer allows us, as a community and individuals, to communicate directly with God. We believe God is relational with all people, and God listens to people’s prayers. Prayer is a two-way dialogue: we speak to God, and God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit.
7. Giving & Service – We participate in the mission of Jesus Christ by offering our gifts and service in ways that further God’s ongoing work in the world. These gifts include – but are not limited to – our money, time, and talents. We are called to serve others sacrificially, as Jesus did.
